  1. One of my favorite books. Maisie Dobbs is an amazing heroine, a private psychologist and investigative detective who is fighting to be an independent woman in the years following WWI. A great, strong female protagonist, with a heartbreaking and inspiring past, (and I don't use those words often to describe characters or books), Maisie will captivate you and draw you in. In this and the following books, her cases revolve around events that go back to the war, and reveal the many scars, physical and psychological, that the conflict left on those who experienced it.

The time between the wars is often portrayed more in the light of the Bright Young Things and their excesses, but I think that Jacqueline Winspear captures what the time might really have been like. An interesting contrast to the works of people like P.G. Wodehouse and Carola Dunn's Daisy Dalrymple series.

This could be enjoyed by mystery fans, history buffs, and anyone who likes a good tale with a strong heroine.
