  1. The first half of the book was wonderfully complex, at first it was difficult to discern who the main characters were and what the plot might be. Character development was good and could easily form the basis of many good spin off novels. Unfortunately once the plot was established the eventual outcome became clear and predictable, grinding inexorably to a sad and tragic conclusion for all of the books characters, both major and minor. One can resign oneself to the fact that there are no longer any happy endings in a John LeCarre novel.
