I picked up INKHEART because I was intrigued by the premise of reading characters out of a book (as well as the previews from the recent film adaptation). I enjoyed the book over all, esp. the quotations about books and reading. Meggie is terrific, and readers will easily identify with her, as well as be fascinated by the strange situations. I would say this is for seasoned readers. The book is heavy on narrative, which provides great atmosphere, but will lose the more restless reader. There was something in the author's voice I couldn't quite pin down, but understood when I discovered the book was originally written in German. The mood is very dark also, along the lines of later Harry Potter book. While I found it interesting and entertaining, it's not a book I would consider as a keeper.
ReplyDeleteI too liked the premise of the novel, and had heard great things about it, but I never was able to get into it, and gave up before finishing. The characters never really grabbed me, and I had trouble caring about them right from the start. Ho hum.
